Five rooms in a house named for the Swahili word for togetherness — carved masks, kente and kilim, and a safari painted the whole way up the stairs.
Ujamaa means togetherness
Ujamaa is the Swahili principle of cooperative economics — building together, sharing the work. The house takes the name seriously. Carved figures and masks along the walls, kente and kilim on the floors, a fringed parasol in the living room, papyrus art in a frame, and a full safari mural — lions, giraffes, elephants — painted up the stairwell. Underneath the colour it is a straightforward student house: five furnished rooms, a shared kitchen and dining room, a rear yard and a balcony off the second floor.
